Jim Merselis takes over at Biosensia as Company Prepares for Commercialisation

Dublin, Tuesday 19 February 2013 … Biosensia Ltd., a point of care diagnostics company, today announces the appointment of James D. Merselis as Chief Executive Officer. Jim joins as the company seeks to secure regulatory approval for RapiPlex, its Point of Care platform, and continues to progress a pipeline of commercial deals.

Jim joined Biosensia in 2012 as a non-executive director, and will work closely with outgoing CEO Diarmuid Flavin to manage the transition. He is a non-executive director at Trinity Biotech (NASDAQ: TRIB) and has been a consultant to a range of healthcare companies. Jim was formerly President and CEO of ITC Nexus Dx, Inc, a privately held diagnostics company working to improve patient care by providing rapid and reliable point-of-care medical test information. Prior to this, he served as President and CEO of Alverix, Inc, a privately held company developing portable medical diagnostic instruments.

Previous roles included, President and CEO of Hemosense Inc. (AMEX:HEM) (now Alere), President and CEO of Micronics (now SONY), and a number of positions with Boehringer Mannheim Diagnostics (now Roche Diagnostics).

Mr. Merselis said, “This is a great time to be joining Biosensia. RapiPlex is a fantastic platform, and will make a significant impact in the point of care or near patient testing market and other industries where sensitive information is needed in decentralized locations. With the initial product development now largely completed, we will be securing regulatory approval prior to product launch.”

Dr Jim Walsh, Chairman of Biosensia ltd., said: “We are very pleased to have Jim on board. He brings a wealth of experience in healthcare diagnostics and in particular the point of care space. This experience will be crucial as Biosensia continues to develop and RapiPlex reaches commercialisation.”

Over the past eighteen months, Biosensia has achieved a number of important milestones. The company raised €2 million in November 2011, and July 2012 saw the company showcase the RapiPlex platform for the first time at the American Association of Clinical Chemistry (AACC) conference held in California. In addition, the company has registered its first patent, and is currently completing a new round of investment.

Silicon Republic Showcases Biosensia’s Point of Care Technology Platform

Dublin, Ireland, 09 January 2013 … Silicon Republic, Ireland’s Number One source for technology news has showcased Biosensia’s leading point of care diagnostic platform, RapliPlex.

The article describes how RapiPlex works, and its benefits for healthcare, particularly in a primary care setting. Diarmuid Flavin, CEO of Biosensia, explains: “Point of care is the ability to be able to perform what are traditionally complex immunoassays in a decentralised fashion. At the moment if you present yourself at a GP’s office for a blood test, what typically happens is that blood is taken in several tubes and sent to a central laboratory for testing”. “Our technology allows for the same test to be performed in the Doctor’s surgery. The patient will receive the result for the ailment being tested for then and there, during that visit.”

The article also looks at the market opportunity provided by RapiPlex. “Our platform technology lends itself to multiplex analysis,” adds Flavin. “The advantage of what we have done is that we have one reader and you can have multiple different products off that reader - each cartridge can provide as little as one analyte result or as many as 12 or any combination thereof. “There are a whole host of emerging biomarkers coming to the fore now, such as for kidney and liver damage and cardiovascular risk profiling. We are actively seeking and have are having discussions with collaboration partners around new content for the platforms.”

The article also discusses he future plans with Flavin for Biosensia: “We are about to receive our first CE mark, which we expect to have in early 2013, we will also submit our first product for US 510k approval at the same time.”

The initial approval for the RapiPlex platform is using a myoglobin assay, and Biosensia plans to develop more products, including tests for screening sexually transmitted diseases, with Flavin foreseeing a “significant growth phase” in the next 18 months as Biosensia ramps up manufacturing.

Dublin, 16 April 2012 … Biosensia Ltd., a point of care diagnostics Company, will be presenting two posters at this year’s AACC Oak Ridge Conference, ‘Emerging Technologies for 21st Century Clinical Diagnostics’, in San Jose. The posters will illustrate a series of developments proving the effectiveness of Biosensia’s RapiPlex platform.

RapiPlex, is a novel, user-friendly, cost effective, multiplexing point of care in vitro diagnostics platform that gives access to a broad range of diagnostic applications including acute phase diagnostics, prognostic diagnostic panels and companion diagnostics at the point of care. RapiPlex enables the transition of complex immunoassays from the central laboratory to the point of care across a wide variety of samples types.

The posters: ‘Evaluation of a Multiplex Drugs of Abuse Detection Platform with Integrated Sample Handling Technologies’ and ‘RapiPlex a small volume whole blood quantitative microfluidic fluorescent Point of Care platform’ will describe how Biosensia’s RapiPlex platform can be used to detect drugs of abuse; making it suitable for use in a variety of point of care settings such as hospital ER, doctor’s office, or workplace testing. The ability to detect cardiac markers in blood demonstrates how RapiPlex can be used to rapidly diagnose heart attacks in a clinical setting.

Niamh O’Luanaigh, Head of Assay Development at Biosensia, who led the work and is presenting the posters at the conference said: “The posters show just how powerful RapiPlex is and the significant range of uses for it. We believe that RapiPlex can have a significant impact on the way we currently do test, supporting acute phase diagnostics, prognostic diagnostic panels and companion diagnostics at the point of care.”

Diarmuid Flavin, CEO of Biosensia Ltd., said: “This scientific validation of RapiPlex is an important step for us. Having secured funding last year, we are now ready to begin the 510k process for US approval and secure a CE mark for Europe, before moving to full commercialisation in 2013.”

The Oak Ridge Conference is the American Association for Clinical Chemistry’s annual forum for emerging clinical diagnostic technologies and brings together thought leaders from industry, academia, and clinical laboratories. The conference focuses exclusively on pre-commercial technologies.
